Vostok 1

This is a model of the Russian Vostok 1 rocket that launched the first human into space. The Vostok rocket is a derivative of the R-7 ICBM, and has evolved into the Voskhod and then Soyuz rockets. This basic design has been in use in Russia since 1958, showing the strength of the design.

The model is from Classic Paper Space Models, and is a decent model. The instructions can be a little difficult to follow, and some of the pictures aren't the greatest, but if you have built a few models and have some pictures to look at, you should be ok. I would recommend that you don't print this model on regular paper though. Even heavy weight plain paper (around 24 lb) won't be thick enough for how the model is designed. I printed it on that type of paper, and it made things a little difficult at times. Oh well. Live and learn.

The details on the model are pretty good, and there is plenty of room to add more. Putting it together wasn't to bad, and the design is good. I did have a few problems with the model though. Some of the lines are pixelated. From a normal viewing distance that's not a problem, but up close it takes away some. Also, when this model was originally released, the files were jpegs. That means that there are several jpeg artifacts visible to a close inspection, most around the finer details lines. The new files are pdfs, but they are based on the jpegs, and still have all the artifact problems. Finally, some of the blue guide lines are a little long for the parts that cover them and they show through some. If these problems were fixed, it would be a killer model.

Lots of Little Parts

Now, I hate to keep nit picking, but I feel that I have to. I mentioned that the instructions were a little weak, but they really break down on the placement of the raised detail parts. There are so many parts and the placement of them isn't alway clear. It would have been very easy to add a little 'K' in the space that has a part K over it, but nothing like that was there.

But other than all that, the model builds up pretty decently. I wouldn't tackle this one until you've got some paper model experience under your belt, but once you do it's worth the build. I like having the green and white model in my collection, and the four strap-on boosters really make it stand out.

The, the engines are wrong
The, the engines are wrong

And this is what happens when you don't look at references. The engines in the middle are wrong! I can cut off the inner engines, glue on a new bottom, and glue on new engines if I wanted to. But you can't tell it's wrong unless you pick it up and look at it. Since I'm the only one who knows, I'm not going to do it any time soon. Some day I will, but I'm not much of a perfectionist so it can wait.
